Thanksgiving Dinner
In The USA and Canada Thanksgiving day is celebrated on the 4th Thursday of November. It is a public holiday for those countries and a large traditional dinner is eaten. Last year Shelly made a big traditional turkey dinner for all her
friends. First she went shopping and bought a large frozen turkey. Then she bought various vegetables for the stuffing. She also bought a large sack of potatoes, 4 packs of peas, a
container of gravy and a large jar of cranberry sauce. Next she bought two big pie bases and many different kinds of sweet things. Finally she bought a large amount of soft drinks and alcohol. She bought so much shopping she couldn't carry it all and had to use three shopping carts.
When she got home on thanksgiving eve night she spent the next 8 hours in the kitchen. She cut up celery, carrots, and onions and mixed it with bread crumbs and sage for the turkey's dressing. After that she boiled apples and pumpkins for a couple of hours and used them to make two large pies. She made three other cakes as well because she worried that two pies would not be enough. She was very tired by this time so she went to bed without showering and wore her dirty, sticky apron in bed.
The next morning she woke up very early, filled the turkey with stuffing and put the turkey in the oven. It was a very large bird so it would take about 6 to 7 hours. So while she was waiting she prepared several side dishes including squash, sweet potatoes, mashed potatoes, corn on the cob, yams, green beans, peas, bread rolls, gravy, biscuits and the cranberry sauce. After everything was ready, she polished the turkey to make it look more delicious and set up the tables.
There was hardly enough room so she had to take out a lot of furniture and bring in other tables to place all the food. When she was finally ready, she was very exhausted, all her muscles ached like hell and she was covered in sweat and food stains. So for the first time in three days she took a shower. She then put on her new stylish dress she had bought the other day and poured herself a glass of wine and waited for her guests to arrive.
She waited about an hour and no one had arrived. Another two hours later all the turkey was now cold but still no one had arrived. Soon it became dark and all the streets outside were quite and empty. On thanksgiving day in America and Canada, all the family and friends gather to have a turkey dinner, so by night on this day everyone is busy eating and drinking so the streets are very quiet and empty. Shelly's house was just as quiet and empty as the outside streets and it stayed that way all night and all of her hard work and spent money stayed uneaten on the tables. Shelly looked at the wall as she drank the wine.
