what do you think about giving gifts

Culture:
gift giving

giving gifts in the western world not as important as in Japan.
If you visit someones house for the first time a bottle of wine or
a six pack of beer is enough. If they are your friends you don't
need to take anything. At weddings most people buy household
gifts for about $25 such as towels, dinner sets or toasters. Often
a group of guests will put their money together to buy a more
expensive gift such as a TV or a video camera. If you are visited
from another country something unique to your culture is best,
it doesn't need to be expensive or special, just something that is not
usual found in the visiting country. From Japan a good gift would be
a set of chopsticks, geta, a cheap yukata stolen from a hotel, a
ucky cat, or Japanese crackers.
In the office it is not so popular to give gifts because it is
seen as favoritism or brown nosing. Even if you really want to thank
someone just a small gift for the office or just say thank you is enough.
If you really what to thank a family in another country the best thing
to do is cook your county's food for them of take them to a
restaurant of cultural event of your country. So if you really worry
about giving a gift, don't worry most foreigners really don't care.
