The World's Busiest Airport
The Atlanta Airport in the United States in the busiest airport in the world. Officially called Hartsfield–Jackson Atlanta International Airport, over 88 million passengers use the airport every year. As well as that last year in 2009 970,235 flights landed or took off from the airport. Most of
these flights and passengers are domestic. The airport has 151 domestic gates and 28 international gates.
Hartsfield–Jackson International Airport has international services to North America, South America, Central America, Europe, Asia, and Africa. The domestic service goes to every major city in USA. The airport today employs about 55,300 airline, ground transportation, security and other staff. The total payroll is near $2.4 billion.
In the 85 year history of the airport there have been 5 big airplane crashes. Many people were killed in each crash. The latest one happened in 2006 when a airplane crashed while taking off. 49 were killed and only 1 survived. The plane crashed because one of the runways was very old and the map the pilots used was very outdated.
There have been many safety incidents at this airport. On November 16, 2001, a man left the secure area to get his camera bag, which he had left behind, and tried to bypass the wait at the security checkpoint by running the wrong way down the escalators at the secure area's exit. As a result, the entire airport was evacuated, including all aircraft, and operations halted for three hours. The man said that he tried to bypass the security line because he would be late for a flight he did not want to miss his favorite team's football game.
For some unknown reasons the airport experienced a lot of strange things in the 725 toilets From December 2006 to March 2007. During this time 30 men were arrested for doing strange things (gay sex) in the airport bathrooms. The men did not hide in a toilet area but did so in the middle of the floor showing everyone. A lot of these men were very important people such as university professors, and company chairmen. One man was the chairman of an airline cargo company and worked in the airport. So being the busiest airport in the world means there are more chances for strange things to happen.
